What's going to happen to your stuff when you've gone?

Updated: Jun 15, 2023

After dealing in vintage & antiques for over 20 years, I seen some stuff - and by stuff I mean processions, things, objects that have been accumulated through peoples lives.

As human beings we are deeply connected to the material world. We collect things throughout our lives, attaching meaning and values to them. But have you ever thought about what is going to happen to your belongings after you've passed away?

The psychology behind our need to accumulate material things is something that fascinates me. That and a deep rooted love of vintage things, as my house is testament to. Personally I feel more like a custodian than an owner, since the vast majority of the stuff I have was second hand to start with and gets sold on when it's either served its purpose or I've grown tired of it. I like to think I'm doing my bit for sustainability.

The Significance of Possessions

Our possessions often hold sentimental value and serve as reminders of cherished memories, milestones and experiences. From photographs and heirlooms to treasured gifts and prized purchases, they can evoke a range of emotions providing a sense of comfort, nostalgia and identity. Our possessions become intertwined with our stories, representing who we are and the lives we've lived. Not everything has meaning of course - in my experience there's also an unhealthy amount of Tupperware containers, pencils, coat hangers and all those other bits we hold onto thinking they might come in useful one day.

The Fate of Our Belongings

Obviously when we've gone, our possessions continue to exist but their significance changes. Depending on our personal choices and legal arrangements, our belongings may be passed down to loved ones through inheritance. In some cases people leave very specific instructions regarding their distribution ensuring the sentimental or monetary value is preserved.

Alternatively, possessions may be donated to charity and this act of generosity can bring new life to the objects we once cherished, benefiting others in need.

Selling through auctions or estate sales might help raise money as a legacy or pay for expenses that have been created after we've passed away and in turn these possessions go on to have a new life with someone else.

It pays to spend some time thinking about your wishes when it comes to your possessions and if you have specific instructions, make people aware of them or have them noted in your will. It can make things a whole lot easier for those that will handle your affairs after you're death.

Embrace The Transience of Life

Whilst our possessions hold a significant place in our lives, it's important to recognise that our true essence transcends material belongings. Embracing the transience of life can allow us to appreciate the intangible aspects that truly define our lives. Treasure the memories , experiences and relationships that make our lives meaningful. Enjoy having the things that bring you happiness but once you don't need or want it try letting it go, knowing that our possessions are simply the stuff of life. In the process you might just make life easier for the person who will deal with your things after you've gone.
